Finding the right nursing home - this is how it works!

The decision has been made: your relative needs intensive care and attention. Of course, you want only the best for your beloved relative. A place where he or she feels comfortable and at home. Therefore, you should take enough time and inform yourself well. In doing so, it is best to proceed step by step.

At the beginning of your considerations is the question: In which region does the person in need of care want to live in the future? Does he prefer a facility in his current living environment or does he want to move closer to relatives who may live in a completely different location? Does he prefer an urban environment or a living area in the countryside?

Databases facilitate the search for a home

With the help of various databases on the Internet (e.g. Heimverzeichnis.de), you can then begin your search in the selected region. Many of these directories facilitate the search with filters according to prices or also care focuses. Of course, you should keep your financing options in mind and also consider what kind of care and assistance is important for your relative. If you need help at short notice, it is advisable to take advantage of what is known as short-term care. Many nursing homes offer places for this.

Once you have made a preliminary selection, you can find more helpful information on the nursing homes' websites. Or you can have brochures sent to you. Also read between the lines: Is the Internet presence of a facility friendly and informative or rather impersonal and not very transparent? In most cases, care facilities also advertise with the care grades awarded by the Medical Service of the Health Insurance Funds (MDK). However, these have only been helpful to a limited extent up to now, as the MDK only checks the care documentation, but not the practical care in everyday life.

A new testing system improves home evaluation

The result was consistently good to very good scores, which were thus not very meaningful. A new audit system, which has been in use since fall 2019, is intended to improve this. Among other things, nine residents are personally interviewed in a random sample about their life in the facility. "In addition, the expert discussion with the responsible nursing staff is an essential part of the new audit procedure," says Dr. Monika Kücking, Head of the Health Department of the GKV-Spitzenverband.

In addition, there is a new system for measuring quality and presenting the results. Those seeking advice can thus compare different facilities online according to criteria that are important to them. Another good indicator of quality in care is the so-called "green tick". Ideally, you will arrive at a preselection of around three homes as a result of your research.
